🎨 How to color it

Color the mother giraffe golden tan with chestnut spots, the calf a softer honey yellow, the sun bright marigold, and the acacia trees dusty green. Use sharp colored pencils for the many rounded spots, filling each one from the outer edge inward so the outlines stay clean. Try making the calf’s spots a little lighter than the mother’s, like sunlight has saved its warmest glow for the smaller giraffe.

Under the hot marigold sun, Kiri pressed close to his mother’s long legs and listened for the sound again. Hmmmm. It came from beyond the grass, softer than bees and lower than wind. Kiri wanted that cool little hum, so he slipped from the safe shadow and stepped into the bright savanna.

The grass scratched his knees, and dust tickled his nose. At the thorn bush, he paid his small price: three sticky burrs caught in his tail tuft. Then a blue agama lizard blinked from a stone and whispered, “Wait until the hum waits for you.” Kiri stood still. The sun buzzed. The clouds drifted. At last the earth hummed under his hooves, and a hidden spring trembled up between the roots.

Kiri carried the secret back in his quiet, happy steps. His mother bent low, nosed the burrs from his tail, and followed him to the little water. Next time you see him tucked under her curved neck, can you spot the calf who learned to wait for the sound again?
