🎨 How to color it

Color the giraffe golden yellow with chestnut-brown patches, the acacia tree tops olive green, the distant hills sandy tan, and the dust puffs pale beige. Use sharp colored pencils for the giraffe’s many small spots, then switch to broader side-strokes for the open ground and sky. Try making the dust clouds a soft peach-to-cream fade so the running hooves feel warm and lively.

Before the heat turned the acacia leaves silver, Luma pressed three grass stems together with her hoof and tried to twist them into a tiny shade mat. Snap. The stems broke again. She wanted one square of shade made by her own hooves, not borrowed from any tree. So she left her favorite cool trunk and trotted toward the far grass clumps, where the wind smelled dry and sweet.

The plain went hush-hush under her feet. Burrs caught in her tail, and dust puffed around her ankles like little sighs. At the last clump, Luma tugged a ribbon of tough grass and paid for it with a prickly scratch on her nose. Then a dust puff rolled open, and inside lay a pale vine thread, curled safely where nobody ever bent to look.

Back at the acacia, Luma looped grass over vine, over-under, over-under, until a small mat held together in her careful teeth. It was crooked. It was hers. When the sun slid low, her handmade shade made one cool patch big enough for her nose and the scratch on it. Next time dust curls under running hooves, can you spot where a hidden thread might be waiting?
