🎨 How to color it

Color the giraffe golden tan with chestnut-brown spots, make the hay rack warm barn red, and use olive green for the tree leaves and grass tufts. Use sharp colored pencils for the many rounded spots, coloring each patch from the edge inward so the giraffe’s pattern stays crisp. Try a pale blue shadow behind the hay rack to make the giraffe’s reaching nose feel extra close to the secret bundle.

Under the moon paddock’s silver dust, Sable carried a faded blue ribbon tied to one horn. It had belonged to the keeper who hummed through storms, and Sable wanted to tuck it into the high hay rack before the wind took it. But the rack clicked and whispered after dark, and every giraffe knew not to put a nose too near when the shadows smelled like rain and old wood.

Sable stepped closer. Click. Hush. Click. Something inside the hay shivered, though no breeze touched it. “Only one stretch,” she whispered. Her knees trembled as she lifted her chin. The ribbon slipped loose and fluttered into the rack. Sable froze, then reached again, slow as moonrise.

Inside the hay was a tiny compass beetle, tapping its shell against the wooden slats. Its needle-bright back pointed north, away from a gap in the fence where storm water was creeping in. Sable flicked one ear toward the sound, then the other, and bellowed until the herd moved to higher ground. Ever since, giraffes twitch their ears at small secret noises, remembering the night Sable’s faded blue ribbon found the sound beneath the silver dust.
