Across the reed flats, Rafi trotted with a mouthful of sweet green leaves and a hello too big to keep inside. His hooves went thump-thump in the soft mud, and the grass brushed his knees with a swishy, tickly sound. He called good morning to the red ants, the hopping frogs, and even a sleepy termite mound. Each hello made his spots feel warmer in the sun.
Then a blue balloon bobbed down from the bright air, tugging a tiny basket made from a seedpod. Inside stood a field mouse wearing a thistle hat. “Up here, please!” squeaked the mouse, and Rafi lifted his head so the basket could bump gently against his ossicones. The mouse had been delivering sky-giggles, little silver bells that rang only when shared. Rafi laughed, the mouse laughed, and the reeds shook with ding-ding joy. Next time you see Rafi sitting tall between the leaves, can you imagine that hello still bouncing around the reed flats?
