Every dusk, Cleo crossed the cactus arroyo with one smooth pebble in her palm, naming one glad thing before the heat left the sand. Until one day, she invented a game: each glad thing had to be given away before the next bend in the wash. She offered “good breeze” to a thorny pear, “good bloom” to a closed daisy, “good light” to the low sun.
Because of that, the arroyo seemed to answer—not in words, but in rustles, pollen, and the dry click of cactus needles cooling. Because of that, Cleo ran out of pebbles and began giving the game itself to everyone she met at the ridge path. “Your turn,” she said, breathless with a joy too large to keep. Until finally, the whole valley held a bright hush, as if every flower, spine, and last warm stripe of sky were carrying one smooth pebble in its palm.
