🎨 How to color it

Layer the dog’s fur in smoky gray and cream, color the gothic arches weathered stone blue, and make the peonies deep burgundy with olive leaves. Use sharp pencils for the fur tufts, scrollwork, and petal veins, building from the outer edges of each shape toward the center. Add a cool silver-to-violet glow inside the pointed arch so the warm burgundy flowers and pale muzzle feel lit by old glass.

At the ruined chapel, Vesper pressed one paw over the cold threshold and pulled it back before the dust could mark him. He had carried the iron key in his mouth since dusk, wanting only to cross into the sealed choir where the roses smelled of rain through broken stone. Then a stranger stepped from the last unshattered window: not a person, but a narrow gleam with a voice like a wet fingertip circling crystal. “The door opens to anyone who lets the building hear them first.”

Vesper lowered the key. His bark would have filled the nave, so he gave the smaller sound he had never trusted: one breath, one tremble, one soft whine. The arch above him bent inward, scroll by scroll, as if cupping an ear. Flowers carved in the pillars loosened their shadows; the lock clicked without being touched. Ever since, gothic arches have risen to a point and leaned close over doorways, listening for the first brave sound before they let anyone pass the cold threshold.
