Every dusk, Vireo placed one paw beside the dull glass disk set into the observatory floor and listened while sand hissed against the bronze doors. He wanted the disk to answer the sun; for twelve years it gave back only his narrow reflection and the dry smell of stone.
Until one day, a storm covered the sky at noon, and the chamber darkened as if evening had forgotten its hour. Because of that, Vireo did not leave for water with the keepers. Because of that, he heard a small click beneath his paw, then another, like seeds falling into a bowl.
At last the clouds thinned. One blade of light crossed the floor, struck the plain disk, and opened a ring of gold on the wall. The old map was not lost; it had been waiting for a patient shadow. Vireo stood very still as the sun finally answered the dull glass disk.
