Under the damp stone arch, Soren set himself a private challenge: hear twelve whisker-echoes before the incense smoke finished curling past the roses. One twitch made the cloister murmur; two made the thorn leaves tick like tiny clocks, and by nine he was biting back a laugh. Then the nearest rose cleared its throat in a papery, perfumed voice: “Ten, if we’re counting properly.” Soren opened his mouth, not to roar but to object, and the whole filigreed wall giggled in spirals. Together they reached twelve, more or less, while the smoke curled past the roses.
