Between the two watching suns, Sorelle came to the mushroom hollow to straighten the road before the night market arrived. Every cart complained in squeaks; every lantern rattled; the pale road kept sliding into S-shapes underfoot, as if the earth were quietly humming through its teeth. Sorelle pressed her ear to a spotted cap and smelled rain, clay, and the faint peppery dust of fern spores. No one had checked beneath the smallest mushroom, of course. That was where the surprise had hidden: a ribbon of sleeping rainbow, warm as bread, tucked around a silver beetle’s nest.
“Don’t pull it straight,” whispered the beetles, their voices like pins in a tin. “It’s our roof.” So Sorelle laid the rainbow down gently and taught the road to bend over every root, nest, and shy bloom it had been protecting. The market came late, glowing and laughing, and everyone found their stall exactly where their feet wanted to stop. Ever since, the path keeps curving in the mushroom hollow, and if you know the secret, you can feel it saying, under both watching suns: here, here, here.
