🎨 How to color it

Layer moss green and olive through the roots and branches, blush pink and marigold on the round flower clusters, and warm honey in the trunk’s concentric rings. Use sharp pencils and color from the central trunk circle outward so the tiny petals, vein lines, and patterned root channels stay crisp. For a grounded glow, deepen the lower roots with umber and let the blossoms grow lighter toward the top of the mandala.

At closing time, Vesper left the steam-soft fern bench to fetch one cedar seed from the conservatory’s far nursery, where the glass roof clicked with sleet. She wanted it for the empty clay pot beside her cot, a small green witness that she had not merely been passing through. Halfway there, a woman in a wool shawl knelt with her ear to the floor tiles and said, “The roots are louder after snow.” To pass, Vesper gave her own scarf to wrap a cracked pipe, and the cold bit her wrists like mint.

The seed drawer was empty. But beneath it, where damp soil smelled of iron and leaves, a pale root had pushed through the brick seam, curling around a fallen circle of wood. Vesper carried that ring back instead. By morning, the pot held no cedar, only the wooden circle pressed into dark soil; yet the bench, the pipes, the sleeping palms, and the sleet-lit roof seemed to breathe in time. She had gone out for a seed and returned with the place saying her name.
