At sunrise, with grit snapping against her boots, Sable lashed willow into a circle and chased the mesa wind around it, pulling each knot tight with her mother’s plain brass awl. The ring grew bold under her hands: leaf-veins, bead paths, feather tails, a center web humming like bicycle spokes. When she tapped the awl for one last hole, it rang back with every wind it had ever cut—canyon whistle, raven wing, storm dust—so she threaded the sounds into the fringe. By dusk, her own work swung beside the old tool, and the mesa wind ran through the circle again.
