On the first bright morning after snow, Runa tucked her striped scarf under her chin and tapped one hoof on the powder. “Skip, slide, say S!” she called, inventing a game for the quiet slope. She made one curvy trail, then another, puffing little steamy clouds into the cold air.
The hills answered with soft shush-shush sounds. Runa grew braver and hopped to the taller drift, where the wind smelled like ice and pine needles. She drew a small S beside a tall S and gave a proud little bleat.
