The owls had blamed the locked gates, the moths had blamed the clouds, but a small tick-tick sounded from the one place nobody searched: beneath the whorl of hair between her eyes. “Open,” whispered Vesper, and a sunseed unfolded there, petal by petal, too bright to keep. She bowed, and its gold ran into every mane, bridle, and border of the world. Ever since, horses carry sunbursts on their faces, sharing the morning from that hidden place.
