Every day, Koa circled Fossil Reef and played a game he had just invented: count only the waves that moved slower than a drifting shell. Fast waves did not count. Bubbly waves did not count. He wanted to reach seven before the sun turned the water green-gold, but the sea rushed and rattled over the coral like spilled beads.
Until one day, the sixth slow wave arrived carrying a low hum. Because of that, Koa followed it past silver fish and a cracked stone arch. Because of that, he found the seventh wave waiting beside an ancient tooth, taller than kelp, humming back through the sand. “I can wait,” Koa whispered, and the tooth answered with a soft thrum that made every shell tremble.
At last, Koa understood his game had not been counting waves at all; it had been listening for the oldest one. Next time you see the giant tooth among the swirls, can you imagine the slow wave still humming?
