🎨 How to color it

Try a pearl pink tutu with cranberry bodice details, silver moon and stars, deep green pines, and blue-gray lake ripples. Use sharp colored pencils for the feather shapes on the skirt and the curling designs on the bodice, then switch to soft side-strokes for the open night sky. Add a faint lavender glow around her raised hands, as if the moonlight is applauding before anyone else does.

Every evening after class, Zadie counted thirty-two silent steps behind the boathouse and practiced a secret bow for the moon. She had set herself a challenge: leave one tiny gift for the tired lake groundskeeper without getting caught. A polished pebble here, a tied bundle of reeds there—nothing grand, just mischief with good manners.

Until one night, her pointe shoe slid on wet grass with a squeak loud enough to startle three frogs. Because of that, her pebble skipped into the water instead of onto the path. Because of that, ripples nudged a loose reed mat away from the muddy bank, and beneath it glimmered the groundskeeper’s missing key ring.

Zadie fished it out with a cattail, dripping and giggling. “Shh, you saw nothing,” she told the moon. She hung the keys on a low branch, then danced one extra circle so the mud would look like swan tracks. By morning, nobody knew who had helped—except perhaps the stars, and if you count the ripples, you may spot where Zadie’s thirty-two silent steps began.
