🎨 How to color it

Try a royal blue helmet, a white jersey with cherry-red number 7s, tan leather for the football, and silver-gray goalpost uprights. Use sharp colored pencils around the helmet bars, shoe laces, and ball stitching, then switch to broader strokes on the jersey and pants. Add a pale sunrise gradient behind the uprights so the player’s ready stance feels like the first quiet play of the day.

Before the whistles woke, Tavia set the football on the damp hash mark and made up a game called Seven-Second Field. She crouched low, number 7 wrinkling on her jersey, and counted only what stayed still: one bead of dew on a lace, two sleepy crows on the rail, three pale stripes of light across the grass. The air smelled like cut stems and rubber cleats. She wanted to reach seven without hurrying.

At first, the field answered in tiny ways. A breeze ticked the goalpost pad. Her helmet bars held the morning in little squares. “Wait for it,” Tavia whispered, though no one had asked. Four, five, six—then the football gave the softest creak, as if its leather were stretching awake.

On the seventh second, the surprise arrived from behind her: the empty goalpost hummed back every sound she had saved. Dew-tick, crow-clack, lace-creak, breath. Tavia laughed so quietly the hum kept going, turning her game into a duet with the field. Next time you see her crouched between the uprights, can you count seven patient sounds before the first play begins?
