Every evening, after the last cricket scraped its legs together, Nico sorted acorns on the low fork of the old oak and invented rules for games no one else had played. His newest was Moon-Branch Dare: roll three acorns along the bark, tap the banner knot, and land one under a leaf before the moon slid between two stars.
Until one gusty October night, the smallest acorn bounced over the knot and skittered onto the thin branch above the hollow. Because of that, Nico had to climb where the bark narrowed and shivered under his claws. Because of that, the leaves thrashed so loudly he could not hear his own wingbeats, and his belly went tight as a sealed jar.
“I only need one step,” he whispered. He stretched, felt cold moonlight on his beak, and nudged the acorn back with one careful talon. It rolled straight under the leaf, click! Finally, Nico fluffed himself tall and added a brave new rule: the highest branch counts double. Next time you spot the little acorns around him, which one would you dare to roll first?
