Under the lemon-slice moon, Dashi tapped a silver key against his palm: tink, tink, tink. He wanted to open the tall front door only when the key felt ready, so he waited on the porch while the boards gave soft old-house creaks and the night smelled like dry leaves and chimney soot.
Bats looped between the chimneys. Curtains shivered without wind. A wooden bat ornament above the door swung its tiny feet. Dashi counted roof curls, then shutter stripes, then the little knots in the porch rail. “Any minute now,” he whispered, though the key stayed cool and stubborn in his hand.
At last, a squeaky voice said, “Pardon me. Are you waiting for me to finish my bath?” From the keyhole peeked a spider wearing a soap-bubble hat, polishing each leg with a cobweb towel. Dashi bowed so hard his cape flapped. The spider hopped aside, the key turned with a cheerful clack, and the house let out a giggle of warm, dusty air.
