🎨 How to color it

Color the off-road SUV sunflower yellow, the roof rack gear brick red and slate gray, the pine trees deep forest green, and the mountain peaks icy blue. Use sharp colored pencils for the tire treads, grill mesh, and tiny evergreens, then switch to broader strokes for the hood, doors, and open mountain slopes. Try a dusty tan trail with gray rock shadows so the bright yellow truck feels like it is bouncing through the whole valley.

By the gear shed, Nico pressed bottle caps into wet clay and scratched arrows into each one with a nail. His new game, Trailmaker Challenge, needed a car, twelve marker coins, and a road that nobody could drive the same way twice. Pine sap stuck to his fingers, and the toy 4x4 on his workbench wore a cardboard roof rack tied with red string. “First marker means climb,” he said, clicking the wheels over a pile of pebbles.

He set the clay coins along the alpine path behind camp: one by the split boulder, one near the creek that hissed over stones, one where the air smelled cold and bright. At every marker, he added a rule—hum like an engine, hop a crack, name a peak. The game grew faster than his feet. When the trail bent between two tall pines, Nico stopped.

Someone had placed a thirteenth marker ahead: a flat stone with an arrow, the same shape as his, but old and lichen-green. Beyond it, the valley opened wide, with zigzag roads and silver clouds lined up like waiting flags. Nico slid his newest clay coin beside the old one, proud that his handmade game had found the mountain’s own game. Next time you spot the roof rack and the rocky trail, see if you can guess where marker thirteen is hiding.
