🎨 How to color it

Color the boy’s hat deep charcoal, his corn golden yellow, the girl’s basket honey brown, and the cabin logs warm cedar. Use sharp colored pencils for the woven basket, corn kernels, log grain, and tiny fence rails so the small lines stay crisp. Try a sunset glow behind the hills, with orange light touching the pumpkins and the open cabin door.

Under the cabin’s straw roof, Bren tucked a folded corn husk into his sleeve and counted the kernels in his armful. He wanted the husk’s tiny charcoal mark to prove which corn was his for the harvest table. Then came three soft knocks from the open door—tap, tap, tap—though nobody stood there. Outside, the air smelled of leaves and woodsmoke, and the path stones felt cold through his buckled shoes.

He stepped past the pumpkins to follow the sound. At the fence, a loose rail tapped in the wind, pointing toward Mira’s basket. The little price was his best ear of corn; he set it on top of her grapes, and the basket gave the same secret knock. “It’s calling everyone,” Mira whispered. Bren carried back no proof, only a bigger grin and a basket-song to share. Next time you spot the corn and grapes together, listen for tap, tap, tap.
