Behind the snow fort, Tavin tapped his striped mitten on a carrot. “If the carrot points to noon,” he whispered, “the pine bells must answer.” He had just invented Carrot Clock, and he needed one tall snow friend to be the clock tower. The clearing smelled like cold pine needles and fresh snow. Tavin carried the carrot past the comfy fort wall, but the drifts grabbed one boot with a soft shloop. He lost a mitten button and had to hop, hop, hop to keep his toes warm.
At last he fixed the carrot into the snowy face and waited. Nothing rang. Snow ticked down: pat, pat, pat. Tavin almost turned back, but then the carrot’s point made a thin blue shadow on the snow. Under it lay a tiny brass bell, hidden since last winter. “Wait for the shadow,” he breathed. When he lifted it, the pines gave one secret chime. Next time you spot that carrot smile, can you guess where noon is hiding?
