The leash loop bumped Tessa’s collar as she tugged from the shady front step. She wanted to carry the leash all the way to the corner, like a big dog, so she held her chin high and click-clicked down the sidewalk. The air smelled like cut grass and warm porch wood. Then the mailbox by number 123 gave a soft bzzz, as if a bee were trapped inside.
Tessa stopped so fast her tag went tink. A folded letter peeked out, purple at the edge. A tiny brown cricket hopped from the flag and chirped, “Wrong house, right puppy.” Tessa paid her price: she dropped the leash handle from her proud mouth and nudged the letter loose with her nose. Inside was a note that smelled like biscuits: Welcome home, Tessa. Your corner is wherever your paws know the way back. She trotted home slower, tail swishing, leash loose and lovely. If you spot the mailbox, keep its little bzzz secret.
