Every afternoon, behind the little theater, Ivy climbed onto the velvet prop pillow and tried her own grand challenge: stay perfectly quiet until the curtain rope went swish. The pillow smelled like dust, face powder, and old roses, and Ivy’s red bow always tickled one ear. Usually she lasted three whole breaths before barking at a rolling button, a sneezy costume feather, or her own reflection in the tuba.
Until one day, the stage manager left the pillow center stage, right under the spotlight. Because of that, Ivy found herself in front of rows of empty seats while the curtain rope creaked above her. Because of THAT, a pulley squeaked, “Eee-eee-EEK,” and Ivy’s paws wiggled with the need to answer it. “Not one woof,” she whispered, which was almost cheating.
Finally, Ivy pressed her chin into her fluffy chest, puffed her cheeks, and let out the tiniest nose-snort instead. The pulley squeaked again, the curtain rose, and everyone thought the silly snort was part of the show. Next time you spot her sitting so straight on that pillow, see if her bow looks ready to tickle one ear.
