🎨 How to color it

Color the central roses in coral pink and deep red, the tall tulips in buttery yellow, the berries in blueberry blue, and the bow in soft lavender. Use sharp colored pencils for the tight rose spirals and leaf veins, working from the petal centers outward so the small lines stay crisp. Try giving the bow’s little printed flowers the same colors as the bouquet, as if it borrowed its pattern from the garden.

Behind the first stall at Petalwick Market, where crushed mint and damp stems scented the boards, Saffi kept a faded lavender ribbon tucked in her sleeve. It had tied every basket her mother ever carried, so Saffi meant to save it for one perfect bunch: the roses no customer could pass without smiling.

She chose the roundest blooms, snug as secrets, but the market stayed gray. Even the tulips stood like quiet cups. Then a little glass dew-bead rolled from a leaf and landed on the ribbon’s stitched flowers. Psst—here is the part gardeners pretend not to know: the bead held sunrise inside it. Lavender flashed, coral spilled, yellow leaped, and every rose in Saffi’s arms blushed at once.

Saffi laughed so loudly the berry seller peeked over his crates. “Everyone gets some,” she said, tying the ribbon around the stems. Ever since, rose bouquets wear bows, because joy that bright needs help holding itself together—and if you spot the bow among the blooms, you may be seeing Saffi’s sunrise still sharing itself.
