Under the warm, slanting sun, Sable scratched one claw mark in the dust and began her little challenge: count every bend on the ridge trail before the clouds swallowed the light. One bend curved past speckled stones. Two bent under swordgrass that hissed against her feathers. Three slipped beside a fallen giant of wood, silver-dry and smelling of rain kept from long ago. “Don’t skip the quiet turns,” she whispered.
The trail kept offering more than turns. A fern curled like a sleeping tail. A beetle’s shell flashed blue, then vanished under a leaf. Sable counted pawprints, pebbles, shadows, until the numbers felt less like numbers and more like a song running ahead of her. At the ninth bend, she stopped with both feet lifted in dust-bright light.
Across the ground, the fallen tree’s shadow made another trail—dark, smooth, and bending backward through the ferns. Sable laughed softly. The ridge had been counting her, too: claw, feather, breath, pause. She followed the shadow-path home while the sun slid lower, and if you trace the path beneath her feet, you may find the quiet turns she did not skip.
