The mower went chug-chug under Rafi’s hands as he tried to cut one neat path from the back steps to the big shade tree. He wanted the yard ready before his cousins came to play tag. Near the flower fence, a tiny hum tickled the air: mmm-mmm, mmm-mmm. Rafi turned the wheel. The grass smelled sharp and green, and the mower bumped over a lumpy patch. “Who’s humming?” he whispered.
A crooked pipe beside the tree gave one silver drip. Under it, Rafi found a wet paper curl tucked in the dirt. It showed three little dots, just like the three flower beds. Rafi drove to each one, slower now, and the pipe finally sprinkled cool water over the thirsty roots. He did not finish the straight path, but the flowers stood taller when his cousins arrived. If you spot the pipe by the tree, you may know where the secret hum began.
