🎨 How to color it

Give the boy’s police uniform a deep navy blue, the patrol car a bright white with cobalt lettering, and the street trees fresh green leaves. Use sharp colored pencils for the badge points, radio buttons, car number, and crosswalk stripes so the small details stay crisp. Try a sunset-gold glow on the shop windows to make his proud salute stand out against cooler city colors.

Every afternoon, after the library bell clanged, Nico rolled scrap cardboard under the awning of Kline’s Corner Store and built tiny city tools: stop signs, badges, even a radio with a button that clicked. He wanted his homemade traffic signal to blink for the block parade, but his red bottle cap and yellow candy wrapper only sat there, dull as old pennies.

Until one windy day, a retired patrol car arrived for the parade display, smelling of rubber mats and lemon polish. Because of that, Nico was allowed to dust the roof light, and because of THAT, his cloth snagged on a loose plastic cover. Inside, where nobody had thought to look, lay a flat blue lens shaped like a starburst.

“This can shine!” Nico shouted. He taped it behind his cardboard signal, added foil from his sandwich, and held it high when the parade bikes rattled forward. Sun hit the lens—flash!—and the whole crosswalk knew when to go. If you spot the salute, you’ve found the moment Nico’s own hands made the block blink bright as the library bell.
