Every day after the noon sun warmed the fern tips, Juniper checked the burrow path while the kits nibbled clover and practiced tiny hops. She wanted them to know every stump, mushroom, and root by heart, so she invented Burrowdash: race from leaf to leaf, tap the safest trail, and shout “Home!” before the jay called twice.
Until one day, a gust slapped silver leaves across the clearing and hid her careful trail. Because of that, the kits chased the wrong leaf toward the hollow log, where beetles clicked like little wooden drums. Because of that, Juniper bounded after them, nose full of damp bark and mushroom smell, and changed the rules fast. “Follow the leaf that points uphill!” she called.
At last the last leaf pointed straight to the round doorway under the bank. The kits skidded in laughing, muddy-pawed and bright-eyed, as if the whole forest had been built for their game. Next time you spot the leaf near the smallest bunny, remember: in Burrowdash, it might be the one that shouts “Home!” before the jay calls twice.
