🎨 How to color it

Give the grand piano a glossy ebony black, the composer’s jacket a deep teal, the open sheet music a warm cream, and the floating notes a bright gold. Use sharp colored pencils for the narrow piano keys, jacket trim, and tiny staff lines, then switch to smoother marker fills for the bench and wall frames. Try a pale blue wash through the window panes so the golden notes look like they are sneaking into the room after sunset.

Every afternoon, between the dusty shelves and the tall windows of the music library, Quincy gave himself one tiny dare: write three brand-new notes before the clock ticked six. Scratch, tap, plink—he would play one key, bite his pencil, and hide the page if anyone walked near. Until one day, the piano bench answered with a rude little squawk every time he shifted.

Because of that, Quincy tried to sit perfectly still, which made his left foot jab the pedal by mistake. Because of THAT, the three notes boomed across the room, and the floating dust seemed to dance in the slanty light. A librarian peeked over a stack of songbooks. “Was that your new piece?” she whispered.

Quincy’s ears went hot. He wanted to say no. Instead, he grinned at the wicked bench, added its squawk to the rhythm, and played the three notes again—louder, wobblier, real. Next time you spot his pencil in midair, see if you can guess which note began as scratch, tap, plink.
