🎨 How to color it

Color the child’s hair sandy brown, the flower crown hibiscus pink with leafy green, the ukulele golden tan, and the smiling sun lemon yellow. Use chunky crayons or broad markers for the big face, sky, and beach, then switch to a sharper pencil for the ukulele strings and leaf veins. Try making the waves two blues—light aqua on top and deep ocean blue underneath—so the little painted wave on the ukulele matches the sea.

Between the warm sand and the swish-swash waves, Willa strummed her ukulele and chased a sound that kept slipping ahead of her. Plink-plunk, she played by the tide pools. Plink-plunk, she played near the bendy palms. The strings smelled faintly of coconut oil, and the little painted wave on her ukulele seemed to wiggle whenever the real waves rolled in. “Come back, sparkly note!” Willa called, skipping after it.

Then a round voice answered from above: “Try looking up!” The sun was humming, not loudly, but with a golden buzz like bees in beach flowers. Willa laughed so hard her flower crown bounced. She strummed faster, and the sun hummed back, making the water flash silver and the clouds bob along. Soon every wave went swish-plink, swish-plunk. If you listen with your eyes, can you spot where Willa’s sparkly note is hiding between the warm sand and the swish-swash waves?
