Under the warm frond shade, Bina pushed her plumeria stem higher. She wanted to say hello to the blue water, but the tide stayed far off, shushing and shining. Sand tickled her leaves. “Hello?” she called, very small.
A little wave rolled close, flat as a ribbon. It smelled salty and cool. “I can hear you,” it whispered, “but I have never touched a flower.” Bina’s petals trembled. She bent one petal forward. The wave tried a tiny bend too—whoop!—and curled around itself like a soft shell.
