Under the quiet reef, Lumi rubbed a scrap of sailcloth between her fins and hummed with the engine’s soft chug-chug. She wanted to make a guide flag all by herself before the baby fish parade drifted past the coral garden. But her scissors made wobbly bites, her glue smelled sharp, and every plain square flopped sadly on its stick. “I can fix it,” Lumi whispered, pressing the cloth flat with one careful porthole rim.
Then a tickle came from the periscope. Plink! Out slid a tiny metal star, hidden there since the old moon divers forgot it. Lumi traced around it, cut slowly, and stitched the star to her flag with silver thread from a sea snail. When she lifted it, the fish circled close, bubbles popping like little bells. Ever since, small submarines carry star flags to show, “These hands made my way.” Next time you spot Lumi’s flag, see if it still seems to chug-chug with pride.
