Every morning before the bees warmed their wings, Saffron counted twelve soft steps down the meadow path without snapping a single stem. She had set herself a challenge: find the quietest place in the whole field and mark it with a hoofprint in the dust.
One day, a butterfly with wings like painted windows drifted across her nose and turned left where the path turned right. Because of that, Saffron followed through grass that brushed her knees with cool dew. Because of that, she heard things her counting had covered up: clover heads clicking in the breeze, a daisy creaking open, her own breath making a little sea inside her chest.
At last the butterfly settled above a bend where flowers leaned close but left room for one small unicorn. “Here,” Saffron whispered, and the word fit better than a hoofprint. Next time you find the winding path between the daisies, see if you can tell where twelve soft steps led her home.
