🎨 How to color it

Color the haunted house smoky purple, the crescent moon butter yellow, the pumpkins bright orange, and the bats deep charcoal. Use sharp colored pencils for the roof shingles, window panes, fence curls, and stone path so the small lines stay crisp. Try a blue-to-violet night sky behind the stars, leaving the moon’s inner curve glowing pale.

Under the crunchy October trees, Arlo carried a plain brass key tied to his shoelace. It clicked against the stone path with every hop—tink, tonk, tink—while bats stitched quick loops over the crooked roofs ahead. He had polished the key for seven nights because his aunt had said, “When the moon is thin, bring it to the tall house and wait.”

So Arlo waited on the porch between two grinning pumpkins. Wind slid through the iron fence with a whistle like a tiny flute. The house did not creak open. The chimney smoke curled, the stars blinked, and one bat landed upside down on the weather vane as if checking the time. Arlo’s fingers itched to try every lock, but he only held the key warm in his palm.

Then the crescent moon dipped lower, and the key lifted by itself, pointing not at the door but at the sky. A silver line unlocked across the dark, and the stars spilled brighter, one by one, like lanterns being lit for a parade. The house had been waiting too. Next time you see that winding path and the little keyhole door, can you hear the tink, tonk, tink of a key that waited?
