🎨 How to color it

Color the mushroom cap brick red with cream spots, the stump honey brown, the fern fronds deep green, and the fallen leaves golden ochre. Use sharp colored pencils for the cap spots, gills, bark lines, and tight stump rings so the small details stay crisp. Try a soft moss-green shadow around the mushroom’s base to make the stump feel like a secret forest stage.

At first light, when the forest smelled of wet bark and crushed fern, Orin set himself a dare: count every ring on the old stump before the beetles woke. He left his cozy root-pocket and climbed to the smooth, round top, tapping each circle with one pale toe. One, two, three—then a splinter snagged the smallest spot from his cap and sent it skittering into a dark crack.

Orin held still. From the crack came a tiny wooden hum, like a door thinking. “Who’s there?” he whispered. The lost spot glowed cream-white below, shining on a carved mark shaped just like his cap. Orin pressed the spot into the mark. The stump warmed beneath him, and the rings seemed to answer his tapping.

He did not finish counting. He climbed down with bark dust on his stem and a new quiet feeling under his cap: the stump had been saving his place all along. Next time you see those rings, can you find where Orin’s welcome was hiding at first light?
