🎨 How to color it

Use cherry red for the heart cutter, sunny yellow for the star cutter, sky blue for the circle cutter, and tan for the rolling pins and dough strips. Since the cutters have wide open centers and thick borders, chunky crayons can make big happy fills, and staying inside every line is optional. Try giving each tiny sprinkle a different bright color so the cookie table looks secretly busy.

Under the flour table, shh, Dottie patted soft dough: pat-pat, puff! She dared herself to make three cookies with her own little hands—one round, one star, one heart. The rolling pin went rumble-bump. The whisk went tik-tik.

“Hold still,” Dottie whispered. She pressed each cutter down: clunk, clunk, clunk. The dough kept the hug of every edge. Ever since, cookies remember the shapes that first hugged them. Next time you see a star or heart cookie, can you spot Dottie’s clunk-clunk secret?
