Under the quiet theater seats, Orlo pressed a red velvet button to his cheek and listened to the dust tick softly in the floorboards. The button had fallen from his first cushion, the one that smelled of clover hay and warm naps, and he wanted a thread to sew it onto his new nest before moonrise.
A spool glimmered on the empty stage beside a tall hat painted with moons. Orlo climbed up, whiskers twitching at the scent of chalk, candle smoke, and old applause. The thread slipped inside the hat. He followed, paid for it with one tuft of ear fluff snagged on the brim, and landed in a pocket of dark velvet that hugged him like a burrow.
Then the wand tapped: tink! Up he sprang into silver light, clutching the thread and laughing one startled “Oh!” The stage did not feel too big now; it felt like a room waiting for him. Back below, he stitched the button where his paw could find it, and if you spot the moons on the hat, you’ll know which velvet door showed Orlo exactly where he belonged.
