Under the gym lights, Owen tapped his sneakers on the center circle, trying to remember the chant his team used before every game. Without it, their huddle felt too quiet, just squeak-squeak, breath-breath, and the dusty smell of floor polish.
A tiny click came from the empty bleachers. Owen left the safe warm knot of his teammates and climbed the cold metal rows, one step at a time. Under the very top bench, where nobody ever looked except lost popcorn, he found a flat wooden token painted with five crooked numbers. It cost him a scuffed knee sliding back down, but the token fit into a notch in the center circle.
The court gave a soft hum. Lines around their shoes seemed to point inward, and a whisper rose from the floor: “Count together.” Owen grinned and called, “One voice!” This time the team made a new chant, not from memory, but from the secret under their feet; if you trace the circle around the ball, can you guess where the whisper hid?
