Every recess, Zeke lined his sneakers under the old hoop and taped paper badges onto his jersey, hunting for a game nobody had played before. His newest one was Sneaker-Squeak League: dribble once, squeak twice, toss a rolled-up sock at the towel, and blow the whistle only if somebody giggled. The blacktop smelled warm and dusty, and Zeke felt tall in the number he had drawn himself.
Until one day, the whistle stuck on TWEET. Because of that, Marisol’s water bottle became the “timeout tower.” Because of THAT, three kids marched around it in squeaky circles, guarding the basketball like a royal orange egg. “My game works!” Zeke shouted, laughing so hard his badge flapped. Finally, he fixed the whistle with one careful tap, named his team, and stood under the hoop with his handmade number shining. Can you spot the gear that started Sneaker-Squeak League?
