Under the warm curl of his tail, Hollis tucked dry grass into his nap nest and wished for one soft blue feather to finish it. A feather smell was in the air—dusty, sweet, and light—but the garden was taller than his ears. He stepped out between daisy stems, careful as a whisper. Bees hummed. Leaves brushed his stripes. A thorn snagged one whisker, and Hollis sat very still until it let go. “I can wait,” he breathed.
At the far side of the flowers, two butterflies dipped and drifted over an old seedpod no one ever noticed. Hollis lifted his paw, not to catch them, but to shade his eyes. The seedpod popped with a tiny tick, and out slid a blue petal, curled softer than any feather. He carried it home slowly, while the butterflies floated above him like quiet flags. If you find the raised paw among the flowers, you’ll know the exact moment Hollis saw patience open its wings.
