🎨 How to color it

Color the Ark of the Covenant warm gold with chestnut poles, the trumpets brass yellow, the robes cream and sky blue, and Jericho’s walls sandy tan. Use sharp colored pencils for the tiny soldiers, brick lines, and distant houses, then switch to broader strokes for the hills and road. Make the falling stones darker at the cracked wall and lighter inside the dust cloud, so the tumble feels loud even in a quiet picture.

Before sunrise, while the campfires smelled of ash and flatbread, Rinnah tucked her father’s cracked ram’s horn under her sash and hurried after the priests. She wanted to keep it safe, not blown, not dropped, not laughed at for its thin silver repair. All week the march had made her questions gallop: Why circle the city? Why carry quiet before shouting? Why did the old horn hum against her ribs whenever the walls came near?

On the seventh turn, dust tickled her nose and the road felt warm through her sandals. A priest reached back. “Child, that horn has been waiting.” Rinnah’s fingers tightened, because the horn was the last thing her father had shaped before his hands grew weak. Still, she lifted it. Its sound came out soft at first, like wind inside a shell, then deepened until every trumpet answered.

The stones shivered. Not from fear, Rinnah thought, but from remembering the first breath God had put into clay and people and morning. The wall opened in thunder, and her cracked horn rang clear. Ever since, the stones of Jericho have kept tiny hollows in their hearts, so trumpet music can find them; if you search the tumbling rocks, can you spot the ones still listening for Rinnah’s sunrise note?
