Under the whisper bushes, Della pressed a giant paper heart to her chest. She wanted the tiny garden hearts to wake before moon-snack time, but the bushes only rustled, shh-shh, and the flowers kept their sleepy faces closed.
“Maybe one more minute,” Della whispered. She sat still. A beetle tickled the grass. Dew smelled like cold apples. At last, something tapped inside the paper heart: tap, tap, tap. A hidden seed split open where nobody had thought to look, and warm red light spilled out.
