🎨 How to color it

Color the striped bottom tier in cherry red and bright white, the top cake in sky blue, and the star toppers in golden yellow. Use chunky crayons or markers to fill the wide cake bands first, then color the small banner letters slowly with a sharper point. Try making the scattered floor stars red, white, and blue so they look like tiny party sparks around the stand.

Behind the parade tent, where drums went bum-bum and frosting smelled like vanilla, Eli set himself a secret challenge. He would not place the biggest sugar star on the USA cake until the very last trumpet note. Not one second early.

The cake stand wobbled. The little stars leaned. “Now?” whispered his friend Kit. Eli held the star in both hands and listened. Boom, toot, rat-a-tat… then one long shiny note sailed through the tent. Eli set the star on top, and the whole cake seemed to stand taller. Ever since, star cakes wait for the final note before their tallest star goes on. If you peek at the top, can you spot the patient star?
