Before the rooster finished his rusty raa-raa-roo, June had clipped a pencil to her shirt and climbed onto the old tractor. She had made herself a challenge: draw a map of every sound between the shed and the far windbreak before the sun cleared the silo. The engine popped, chuffed, and rattled like beans in a tin cup. She marked three circles for the front wheels humming on hard dirt and zigzags for the rear tires chewing gravel.
Past the barn, the valley opened bright and green. A gate chain clinked. Wheat whispered against the fenders. Even the exhaust pipe added a tall, warm poot that made June laugh. “One more sound,” she said, steering toward the ridge where the air smelled like hay and hot metal.
Then she noticed the surprise: her paper had empty spaces shaped just like the clouds overhead. They were not missing sounds at all. They were listening spots, soft white pauses between all the bangs and hums. June parked in the sun, added a quiet cloud above the barn, and dared the next traveler to find where the chuff-chuff stops and the sky begins.
