🎨 How to color it

Color the tractor a deep farm red, the wagon a weathered tan, the corn leaves bright green, and the barn on the hill a classic white with a silver silo. Use sharp colored pencils for the tire treads, corn kernels, and narrow leaf shapes, then switch to broader strokes for the tractor hood and wagon panels. Try shading the dirt lane with two browns so the big wheels look like they have just rolled through dusty ruts.

Behind the tool shed, where the air smelled like oil and dry corn silk, Quill kept a round tin whistle in his pocket. It had belonged to his father’s old lunch pail, and he tapped it whenever the tractor rattled. But the steering wheel’s cracked knob pinched his palm, and Quill wanted to make a new one himself, not borrow one from the store.

So he slipped down the corn lane to Mr. Voss’s repair wagon, where bolts clinked like beetles in a jar. “Got any walnut scrap?” Quill asked. Mr. Voss did, but it cost one small treasure. Quill laid down the tin whistle. His pocket felt too quiet all the way back.

At the workbench, he sawed, sanded, and rubbed beeswax into the little wooden handle until it shone like dark honey. When he fixed it to the wheel, the tractor turned smooth under his own hand. If you spot the wagon rolling past the corn, keep Quill’s secret: the smallest handle there carries the sound of a tin whistle.
