🎨 How to color it

Give the bear conductor a honey-brown coat, the steam engine a deep forest green, the platform clock a warm brass rim, and the traveler’s backpack a cranberry red. Use sharp colored pencils around the train wheels, suitcase straps, and clock ticks, then fill the larger train cars with smooth marker strokes. Try making the scalloped station awning alternate cream and sky blue so the steam cloud looks extra soft beneath it.

Under the striped awning, Eldon shaved a walnut twig until it fit neatly in his paw. He had set himself one challenge: make a whistle that could call the morning train without using the cracked brass one in the ticket drawer. The platform smelled of wet leaves and coal smoke, and the station clock stared down with both hands stiff as icicles.

When the engine rolled in, no bell rang. No clock chime answered. A traveler with a rolled blanket whispered, “Maybe the platform forgot.” Eldon climbed onto a crate, pressed his handmade whistle to his mouth, and blew. Peep! The sound slipped under the awning, bounced off the luggage stack, and woke a hidden spring inside the clock with a silver tick-tick-tick.

From that morning on, the hill platform never trusted a bell alone. Every departure began with a whistle made by hand, bright enough to stir the clock and the steam together. If you spot Eldon’s little whistle, you’ll know why the trains still leave on a proud peep.
