🎨 How to color it

Shade the wolf in layered silver gray and sandy brown, color the prickly pear pads sage green with coral blossoms, and make the distant mesa a warm red-orange. Use sharp colored pencils for the wolf’s fur strokes and cactus spines, then switch to smoother side-strokes for the broad sky and desert ground. Try a pale yellow sun fading into light blue sky so the wolf’s darker markings stand out against the open desert.

Before the sun climbed high, Juniper trotted the dry wash with three cool pebbles tucked under her tongue. She wanted to leave them beside the thorny cactus trail, one at each bend, so the tiny day-walkers would know where the shade lasted longest. The sand smelled dusty and warm, and her paws clicked tik-tik over flat stones as a round sun lifted behind the clouds.

She placed the first pebble near a yucca, the second beside a cracked slab, and the third where prickly pear flowers opened like little flames. No one saw her nudge them into place. That suited Juniper fine. A gift felt brighter when it did not have to wag its tail and announce itself.

Then a desert wren zipped down, chirring fast enough to rattle the cactus spines. It hopped straight into Juniper’s long morning shadow and vanished behind her front paw. There, where nobody thought to look, lay a tiny hollow filled with dew, gathered in the pawprint she had made before dawn. The wren drank, a lizard sipped, and Juniper stood still, grinning softly at the gift she had carried without knowing. Next time you spot her careful paws near the cactus, can you find the place where the cool surprise waited before the sun climbed high?
