🎨 How to color it

Layer the dragon’s scales in deep emerald and teal, make the wing panels smoky violet, color the crystals pale aqua, and keep the spiral clouds in soft silver-blue. Use sharp pencils for the tiny scale rows, paisley curls, and dotted bands, working from the dragon’s face outward so your hand doesn’t blur the fine details. For a subtle twist, blend a faint indigo glow around the crystal points and let that cool light touch the nearest claws and cloud edges.

Before dawn, when the cloud vault smelled of rainstone and cold metal, Nerith pressed one claw to the doorway of his warm hollow and made himself a dare: bring back a silent crystal from the upper shelves before the first star faded. The shelves hung beyond the familiar spirals of mist, past wind lanes that hissed like paper being torn. He carried no lantern. Each beat of his wings shook dew from their patterned edges, and each climb cost him a little comfort: one scraped talon on a glassy ledge, one long shiver where the air thinned and the stars seemed close enough to prick him.

At the highest shelf, the quietest crystal waited in a nest of white vapor. When Nerith closed his claws around it, the stone did not ring or shine the way bold crystals did. It answered with a pulse under his scales, slow as a second heartbeat. In that pulse, hidden lines appeared inside the clouds—narrow turns, curled passages, a small door of vapor he had flown past all his life. He followed them down, not back to his hollow, but to a chamber behind it where the wind kept the names of every dragon who had ever been afraid and gone anyway. Nerith tucked the silent crystal beside those names, and before dawn, when the cloud vault smelled of rainstone and cold metal, his own new courage glowed without making a sound.
