Under the warm window stripe, Nico tapped his round tag once—ting—and invented the Listening Tag Game. If he could find the quietest sound in the room before the sun moved off his paws, he would crown himself champion. First came the radiator’s tick, then the paper plant’s dry whisper. He stepped off his leafy cushion, losing the cozy heat, and padded into the cool hallway where dust smelled like old books.
Ting, ting, answered something smaller than his own tag. Nico followed, whiskers brushing the wall. Behind the umbrella stand sat a brass button, rolling whenever the house breathed. Beside it, a ladybug crouched, stuck on its shiny back. “Hold still,” Nico murmured. One careful paw flipped it over, but the button skittered under the rug.
Nico waited. The ladybug opened its tiny shell and flew to the cushion, landing exactly where the sunlight stayed longest. Look back at his tag below his chin—you can almost hear the first soft ting.
