🎨 How to color it

Layer deep teal into the peacock feather eyes, antique gold along the slender veins, plum purple in the heart centers, and moss green on the curling scrolls. Use sharp colored pencils and work from the central teardrop outward, so your hand does not smudge the many narrow feather lines. For extra movement, shade each plume from dark at the spine to pale turquoise at the outer edge, like light sliding across silk.

Every evening, Tavia crossed the aviary court by counting feather tiles under her boots: three teal, one gold, turn at the carved vine. She wanted the keepers to stop calling her a guest and hand her the brass gate key. To prove she knew every path, she invented Plume Race—start at the center, choose any curling stem, and reach the outer fan before the peacocks cried sunset.

Until one day, the first line she touched warmed like sunlit wire and slid sideways with a hiss of dust. Because of that, the court unfolded into a racing maze of green eyes and golden ribs. Because of that, Tavia had to leap from plume to plume, laughing as the air smelled of rain and feathers, while the key flashed ahead on a vine that refused to be caught.

At the last curl, she stopped chasing and matched her breath to the court’s bright turning. The maze snapped into a perfect fan beneath her feet. The key dropped into her palm, and the peacocks cried as if they had known her all along: three teal, one gold, home.
